It really depends on the hybrid you get. If you get something small like the Prius, you will get great gas milage (it gets 50 mpg in real driving), not to mention the impact you have on the environment is significantly less than if you drove a non-hybrid. But, if you get something big like a GMC hybrid, there really is no benefit.
Also, the technology in the hybrid differentiates from car-to-car. Ford and Toyota hybrids have the ability to drive solely on electric power, so at low speeds, you don’t make a sound, and don’t use any gas. Based on firsthand experience, the Prius can drive at 30 to 40 miles per hour solely on electric power, it just uses the gas engine to accelerate.
However, most GM hybrids, and Honda hybrids can’t do this. They can turn the engine off while you come to a complete stop, but they cannot run on electric only mode. If the car is moving, the gas engine is always on.
I guess in summary, you only get a benefit from better hybrids, specifically the ones from Toyota and Ford. However, if you get one a GM hybrid, especially a big SUV, there really is no benefit.
you pretty much get double the gas mileage of any car on the road today
tahts pretty much it
although i just filled up on my non hybrid car
and got 37 mpg..
