You Should Know Before Buying One

Hybrid cars are getting a lot of attention these days since they are designed to help reduce the carbon footprint vehicles make on the planet. These cars are becoming more popular all the time and consumers are being urged to replace their older fuel consuming vehicle with all the carbon emissions they produce for one of the new hybrid cars sold on the market today. Sounds like a great idea, right and for the most part, it is.
One of the problems some consumers have with buying a hybrid is the cost. They do have a higher price tag than the gasoline version of the same vehicle and for many consumers, it’s more than they can afford. Still, the benefits of the new hybrids can’t be ignored.
These vehicles are powered by an electric motor, battery and fuel. If you’re considering purchasing a hybrid car, you should know that there are actually two different types and these are described below.
1. Parallel Hybrid – In the parallel hybrid car, the battery will provide power to the electric motor while the fuel tank will provide gas or diesel for the engine. The motor and the engine will turn the transmission at the same time, which is what moves the vehicle. The energy generated by the motor and by braking the car is recovered and used to recharge the batteries.
2. Series Hybrid – With this type of hybrid the engine does not directly power the car but instead the fuel engine powers a generator. This charges the car’s batteries or the electric motor, which turns the transmission.
Understanding the difference in these two types of hybrid cars is important so you’ll know which one would suit your needs the best.
Here are a few more things that you should know about hybrid cars before buying one:
• Most of the vehicles offer many luxury features that you won’t get with a gasoline powered vehicle to help make the occupants more comfortable.
• They are considered to be as safe as other vehicles even though some concerns have been expressed about the possibility of electric shocks if the batteries are exposed during an accident.
• General maintenance is usually less than that of a gas fueled vehicle but the cost of replacing the batteries raises a lot of issues. Manufactures usually offer somewhere between eight to ten years for the warranty of the battery but the price for replacing them yourself could prove to be very expensive if it became necessary.
• They tend to be more limited on cargo space than gas fueled vehicles but the interior space for passengers have been greatly improved throughout the years.
Combining the electric power with an engine allows the manufactures to reduce the engine size and this has many advantages. A smaller engine means a lighter car, which in turn means that it takes less energy to accelerate the vehicle. Most of these vehicles are also made from light-weight materials which help to reduce the consumption of fuel used even more.
Taking into consideration that you can even shut off the engine and run completely off the electric motor when this is practical to do so, you can see why hybrid cars are becoming so popular. Add in the fact that the newer models are designed to have more power, they seem to be the prefect solution needed to help reduce emissions and save on the earth’s natural resources.
