Battery Packs and Hybrid Cars

There is no denying that hybrid cars have many advantages but one of the biggest concerns surround hybrids are the battery packs that power the electric motor. There are many concerns such as how long they will last. How much do they cost to replace if something were to happen to the battery? What happens if you’re in an accident and needed to be rescued? Do they pose a danger of electrical shock?

All of these are good questions and these are the issues that will be addressed here. We’ll start with the concern over how long these battery packs last. The official theory is that as long as proper care is used and the vehicle is not abused in any way, the battery packs should never need replacing. They are much different from the batteries used in traditional vehicles that must be replaced every few years.

In fact, they are designed to last between 150,000 miles to 200,000 miles and this is considered to be the normal life expectancy for most vehicles. This is why you will hear that the batteries in hybrids are designed to last a lifetime.

It would be very unlikely that you would have to replace the battery pack in your hybrid car and therefore, it’s believed that this is something consumers shouldn’t be concerned with. For this reason, manufactures offer warranties that last between eight to ten years on the battery packs in hybrids.

Having said that, anything could happen that would require you to purchase a new battery pack. It could be damaged in an accident and need to be replaced. In the event this happens, consumers would like to know how much it would cost them to replace the hybrids battery. The answer depends on several different things but it’s estimated that they would cost someone between one thousand and six thousand dollars. There is such a wide gape in the price range because it depends on the model and make of the hybrid and its age.

This brings us to the next question, which is, what happens if you’re in an accident? There have been all types of rumors going around such as, if you’re trapped in a hybrid due to an accident that rescue workers won’t help you. Another concern is that hybrid cars may produce an electrical shock if you’re in an accident and the battery pack is damaged. These are myths and shouldn’t be something that consumers need to worry about.

If you are involved in an accident the battery pack is designed to disconnect so there is no chance of being electrocuted. The power lines that run through the vehicle are not located in areas where they would be cut if you were trapped in the vehicle and needed to be rescued. Plus, they’re all clearly marked so rescue workers would know if they come anywhere close to where they are located. Therefore, there is nothing to be concerned with because hybrid cars are considered safe all consumers.
